London Colney Footpaths
Walk 3 From Nightingale Lane to Tyttenhanger Green. MAP
This walk covers an area which is part of London Colney Parish but remote from it, that is the land between Nightingale Lane and Highfield Lane. Starting from the northern end of High Street cross the footbridge over the A414, then turn right and cross the road to St. Albans (London Road). Walk straight on in front of the houses to Nightingale Lane (signed) and turn left into the lane. Nightingale Lane is no longer a through route for vehicular traffic, so there should be very few cars. Walk along the lane to the first footpath sign on the right, turn into this path and follow the path along the hedge. Climb over the stile, (Point A), be careful, especially with dogs, this field often contains cows in calf. It is possible to turn left along the hedge before climbing the stile, and walk around the field rather than across it. If there is no problem with livestock, proceed diagonally across the field to the stile in the far left corner. Climb the stile, at the footpath junction a few yards further on turn right. The footpath joins the road called Highfield Lane after a short distance, cross this road. For the Shorter route: (Point B on map) Turn left along the pavement to the junction on the right with Tyttenhanger Green, cross over into the signposted footpath on the left. (Point C). For the Longer route: (Point B on Map) Turn right and walk along the pavement to the signposted footpath after the group of houses on the left. Turn left into this path and follow it to the field edge, cross the field diagonally, bearing left. Negotiate the stile, cross the next small field diagonally, bearing left. There is a pleasant small pond over to the right in this field. Cross the stile in the corner, continue along the line of the fence towards the end of the houses, climb the stile next to the end of the house garden and continue to the junction with Tyttenhanger Green. Turn left and walk the length of Tyttenhanger Green to the junction with Highfield Lane. (Maybe stopping at the Plough Inn!) Cross Highfield Lane, into the signposted footpath opposite. (Point C). Both Routes: Follow this path along the fence, bear right at the fence corner, then left along the edge of the field next to the hedge. Stay with this path until Nightingale Lane is reached, turn left. Recently this area has been redeveloped and an alternative return route starting at point C, which may be a slightly easier walk, is to continue along the road for about a hundred yards and turn left into a small wood. Continue along the path and turn left when it joins a cycle/footpath. This path continues until it meets the junction of Nightingale Lane and the main road. Turn left down Nightingale Lane. Walk back along Nightingale Lane to the junction with the London Road and thence back to London Colney village over the footbridge. Alternatively you may cross over Nightingale Lane into the signposted footpath which leads along the side of the cemetery to London Road, and return to London Colney along either London Road or Old London Road.
