MAP |
| Starting from the village green (off the southern end of High Srreet) in front of the Green Dragon public house, follow the marked footpath over the concrete footbridge. Continue straight over the wooden footbridge, climb the stile and follow the hedge line straight onwards, over the next stile, to the far fence (point A on map). Turn right along the fence, to the stile. Climb the stile and turn left onto the footbridge over the M25. At the Road known as Bell Lane, cross straight over into the tarmac driveway, continue straight on into the field, following the path along the hedgeline. Shorter Route: Turn left at the junction with the tree-lined bridlepath (point B on map). After about a quarter of a mile turn left at the junction with the footpath across the playing fields. Longer Route: (Point B on map) Cross over the tree lined bridlepath which crosses the route, and climb over the stile opposite. Cross the playing field and negotiate the stile opposite. Turn left along the edge of the field. At the track turn left, then follow it round to the right. After about a quarter of a mile, near the group of buildings, bear left at the junction on the concrete track. Pass through the gate at the end. On the right is the Mosquito Aircraft Museum. Bear left, then right between the houses, following the waymarks. Salisbury Hall is on the right, behind the moat. Turn left at the entrance to the hall, then left again at the junction some 20 yards on. Follow the concrete track, bear right into the trees, following the waymark on the telegraph pole. Turn right after about a quarter of a mile at the waymarked junction. Both Routes: Follow the concrete track over the playing fields, taking care to keep dogs under control, past the house on the left, straight across the car park into the drive. (Waymarked). Follow the drive back to Bell Lane, turn left along the pavement and continue back to the footpath sign on the right where the path over the M25 is rejoined. Cross Bell lane and pass over the M25. On the far side keep straight on into the tree-lined bridlepath. After some quarter of a mile turn right across the stile, bear diagonally left across the field. Turn left across the stile in the far corner back across the wooden footbridge to the village green. Points of Interest: Mosquito Aircraft Museum Salisbury Hall was the birthplace of the wooden Mosquito Aircraft, one of the most successful aircraft used in World War Two. The museum contains exhibits restored by volunteer enthusiasts. Salisbury Hall This was reputedly a haunt of Nell Gwynn and King Charles 11. The Hall is an old manor house, dating from before 1600. A cottage known as Nell Gwynn's is within the confines of the moat. The hall was inhabited from 1905 to 1910 by Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston. The building is now used as offices and is not open to the public. |
